As enterprises extend to the cloud, more attention must be paid to the underlying network. Latency and loss rates across the Internet are as erratic as the weather. To illustrate the unpredictability, Silver Peak engaged with two leading Internet authorities to track latency and loss statistics for two weeks across hundreds of routes. The results are illustrated in the infographic above.
Long story short…the Internet is very unpredictable, and even when you think you know the relative distance between two site, the actual latency can vary dramatically.
Good news: SaaS providers typically design their offerings for availability and scale.
Bad news: neither the SaaS provider nor IT is able to appreciably improve the network. And it is the network (Internet) that is so critical to SaaS.
